Service on Nonprofit Boards

Like many people, I’ve served on the boards of a number of nonprofit organizations over the years. It’s a good way to give back to the community and it can help you develop a network of community relationships, hone your managerial skills, etc. However, most nonprofits don’t make a lot of demands on their board members beyond attending board meetings and buying a table at the annual luncheon, or sponsorship a foursome in the annual golf tournament – or something like that.

Well, I’ve been asked by a nonprofit group for which I am a board member, to meet with some of their development team next week after our board meeting to review materials they will use to solicit donations. They know my background as a corporate funder for many years and they want my perspective on their communication materials. This is something I’m more than happy to do and it’s a great example of a nonprofit taking full advantage of the people they have on their board.

More nonprofits should carefully inventory the skills and knowledge of their board members and find ways to tap into those strengths. This will strengthen the connection between the board members and the organization, and it’s just a smart use of valuable resources.
